After a stint in both San Diego and Seattle, Rodney Hicks will return to Broadway in the new 9/11 musical Come From Away. The musical, which takes its Broadway bow in February 2017, features a book, music, and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Heinhas. Christopher Ashley directs.
Based on events in Gander, Newfoundland, the musical centers around the residents as 38 planes carrying 6,579 people land in their small town after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. Hicks plays Bob, the role he originated in the world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse.
Before opening at a Shubert Theatre to be announced, the musical will run at Ford’s Theater in Washington, with further tryouts at the Royal Alexandra Theater in Toronto.
Hicks made his Broadway debut in the original cast of Rent as an ensemble member. He came full circle with the show when he rejoined the cast as Benjamin Coffin III before closing in 2007.
Since then, he’s starred in the controversial Kander and Ebb musical The Scottsboro Boys on Broadway and in Philadelphia. He’s also made various regional theatre and television appearances. His play NC-17, had an industry reading in New York earlier this year.
Actress Q. Smith makes a Broadway return as well, having been in the 2006 production of Les Misérables.
