The living legend Cicely Tyson is featured on the cover of TIME magazines 2019 Optimists issue after being chosen for the honor by filmmaker and guest editor, Ava DuVernay. The cover captures the timeless beauty of the 94-year old.

The stunning feature follows the honorary Academy Award Tyson received for her long-spanning career excellence back in November 2018 for which she chose DuVernay to present to her.

In Tyson’s interview with TIME for the cover, she discusses why she loves acting and how she faces the challenges of the field.

What do you love about acting?

The thing about acting for me and why I became so enraptured by it was because it allowed me, [someone] who was so shy, to express my emotions through another individual. It wasn’t me — it was someone else. That’s how I got hooked on acting. It’s an education in and of and by itself. I do a tremendous amount of research because I have to know who this person is in order to let you know who she is. If I don’t feel that I have captured the essence of this woman, I cannot do that.

How do you face the challenges of your profession?

My mother always said, when I went out to get a job I didn’t get and came home so beaten, “Let me tell you something: what is for you, you will get. What is not for you, you will never get.” That’s the way my career has gone. I once turned down a movie that everybody thought I was crazy to do, because it wasn’t the kind of woman I wanted to project. Another actress did it, and she got a nomination for an Oscar. But what happened to me, a week after I turned it down, I got the call to do [The Autobiography of Miss] Jane Pittman. So you know, what’s for you, you’ll get. What’s not for you, you’ll never get.

Cynthia Erivo Croons, Misty Copeland Amazes

Published

Because it’s not like she has anything better to do than to continuously astound and astonish us.

Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo has been on a roll these past couple of weeks, gifting us with clip after clip showing off her ethereal voice. Yesterday, she posted this:

Sorry, but Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo singing “Summertime” (a capella, damn it!) from Porgy & Bess accompanying American Ballet Theatre principle dancer Misty Copeland?

May I propose a brand new musical that involves only Misty Copeland dancing onstage, meanwhile Cynthia Erivo accompanies her a capella? Two groundbreaking women, both who’ve made history in her respective New York theatrical scenes, musical theatre and ballet, in the same show? Count me in.

Naturally, Copeland will need a break from the ABT, and Cynthia Erivo will eventually have to leave The Color Purple. And with open schedules and thirsty fans, this could make some producer’s pocketbook quite happy.

The mini-collaboration comes courtesy of Cosmopolitan magazine, who interviewed Copeland for their August 2016 issue. In the featured article, she talks about her rising career, her dancewear line, and Prince.

Last summer, Copeland leaped onto the map when ABT promoted her to principle dancer, becoming the first Black woman in the 76-history to hold the title. In the fall, she’d make her Broadway debut in the Tony-nominated revival of On the Town for select performances. This week, she’ll dance Romeo & Juliet at the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia.

Broadway producers out there, I hope you’re watching, reading, and formulating something. Because as Erivo says, “different forms of art collide to create one,” just as it always should. #BlackGirlMagic is real.

Visit American Ballet Theatre for tickets and subscription info.

The Color Purple currently plays at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

The Women of Eclipsed Shine in Uptown Magazine

Published

on

There are few things that make your eyes pop and your jaw drop like the beauty of Black people. Being captured in the right lighting in the right elements can make all the difference in how well that beauty shines through. So, when someone gets it right -and I mean all the way right- you must stand up and acknowledge the greatness. Well, that’s what I’m here to do, because Uptown Magazine has knocked all of my teeth out with their new cover & feature story highlighting the women of Eclipsed, which is now in performances on Broadway starring Lupita Nyong’o  & written by Danai Gurira.

Gurira, who is most notably known as an actress — the star of the wildly popular AMC seriesThe Walking Dead — wrote the play fresh out of finishing her studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she earned her Master’s of Fine Arts. She’s starred on Broadway in the August Wilson play Joe Turner’s Come And Gone but is making her Great White Way debut as a playwright with Eclipsed.

“That’s kind of the thing that excites me the most is the idea that we’re breaking that type of barrier with these types of women and hearing these particular voices on The Great White Way,” she said. “It’s really time to break through those barriers and show that there isn’t a reason for the lack of representation or the under-representation.”

Such a great read and gorgeous photography by Marc BaptisteBelow are just a few of our favorites including “Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o joined by a stellar ensemble including Pascale Armand, Akosua Busia, Zainab Jah and Saycon Sengbloh, & the playwright Danai Gurira.
