A Must See

We Were There: Forever With Dael Orlandersmith At NYTW

Recently had the pleasure of seeing FOREVER at the New York Theater Workshop. Dael Orlandersmith boldly started the play by challenging the audience to step outside of ones comfort zone by acknowledging our surrounding neighbors, which I believe helped set the tone and open our minds to the expedition ahead of us.

During this eighty minute production Orlandersmith painted vivid and bold imagery of her life growing up in Harlem New York and her  journey to the iconic Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, which happens to be the final resting place for some of the worlds most legendary artists that have graced our presence such as Oscar Wilde and Marcel Proust.
While on this voyage Orlandersmith was able to find clarity in her life addressing and expressing the  legacy  she inherited from her mother, touching topics such as self hatred, rape, dysfunction, spirituality, verbal/physical abuse and finding a family in the performing arts.

Strongly encourage you to see FOREVER and guarantee you won’t find another production like it. Orlandersmith’s raw, honest and unfiltered delivery will have you breathless causing you to look back over your life experiences and asking yourself have you forgiven those who may have scared you and have you embraced your truth allowing yourself to tap into the person you called to be.

About FOREVER:
Long-time New York Theatre Workshop Usual Suspect Dael Orlandersmith (Yellowman, Monster, The Gimmick) returns to the Workshop with an uplifting semi-autobiographical exploration of the family we are born into and the family we choose. Forever draws from Orlandersmith’s own pilgrimage to the famed Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris – the final resting place of legendary artists such as Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison. At the graveside of these timeless artists, Orlandersmith finds unexpected grace in a gripping tale of the legacy a daughter inherits from her mother

Forever was originally commissioned and produced by Center Theatre Group, Kirk Douglas Theatre, Los Angeles, CA, Michael Ritchie, Artistic Director.
