Last night’s Tony Award ceremony was filled with incredible performances from some of our favorite Broadway musicals. Including the cast of Hamilton, who gave us three incredible performances throughout the show and Cynthia Erivo, Heather Headley, Danielle Brooks and the cast of The Color Purple who brought down the house to a standing ovation (as per usual)! But one of the most jaw dropping performances was that of Queen Audra McDonald who gave us pregnancy perfected during her performance with Brian Stokes Mitchell, Billy Porter, Joshua Henry, Amber Iman and Tony Nominees- Brandon Victor Dixon and Adrienne Warren and the incredible cast of Shuffle Along or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed!
So let’s talk about it. Audra, what are you? Like, 4? 5 months pregnant (this is pure speculation from the mothers on our staff)?! How are you going to come out on stage and completely put all of us other working moms to shame?! HOW. It’s bad enough you look as good as you do in those costumes in your current state, but then you sing AND tap? AT THE SAME TIME?! The other dancers on stage were PHENOMENAL! The tapping was infectious, but then six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald thought, ” Why don’t I take it up a notch and serve the children with a high kick?”. A HIGH KICK AUDRA?! REALLY?! The sad part is that we know she probably didn’t actually think about it. She just went out, did her job and coincidentally threw in a kick high enough to reach the Broadway gods thereby giving us, yet again, one of the most epic Tony Award moments in history- easily surpassing the infamous “Mic Drop of 2013”!
We have compiled some of our favorite fan reactions to Audra serving us life everlasting last night on the Tonys. Enjoy!
Catch the history making show, Shuffle Along, and see Audra before she goes on maternity leave!
