It’s 1979 and we’ve pulled up at the entrance of the Walter Kerr Theatre, the new home of the original “Modern Family.” (Watch out ABC, Broadway is coming for your ratings)
Falsettos is back on Broadway, and Tracie Thoms joins the star-studded cast as “Dr. Charlotte”.
Following the characters Marvin, Trina, and Whizzer, Falsettos explores the possibilities of achieving one big happy family after divorce.
Let me run you some tea by way of my best Color Purple Church Ladies impersonation:
I’m talking the husband left the wife for a man… and the wife marries the family psychologist… and all parties try to stay close because the husband and wife have a son.
I know. Stay with me.
Falsettos is about taking a shot at happiness after disappointment. It’s about new beginnings. On another level, it’s about what it means to be a man. Set in a time characterized by sexual liberation and the onset of the AIDS epidemic, Falsettos brings gravity and complexity to the whims of a family on Dysfunctional Drive.
Tracie Toms joins Christian Borle, Andrew Rannels, and Stephanie J. Park, who will be playing Marvin, Whizzer, and Trina, respectfully. Betsy Wolfe, Brandon Uranowitz, and Anthony Rosenthal round out the cast.
James Lupine (playwright) will be directing this revival at the Walter Kerr Theatre. Previews begin September 29, 2016, with an official opening on October 27, 2016.
Tracie Thoms was last seen on The Great White Way in Stick Fly in 2011. If you’re anything like me, you fell in love with Tracie as Joanne in both the film and closing company of the 2008 revival of “Rent.” After graduating from Julliard, Thoms made her Broadway debut in Drowning Crow. Notable television and film credits include “Cold Case” and “Devil Wears Prada”.
