Daveed Diggs Brings #Bars to the Public Theater

Mixing genres aren’t something new. Over the years we have seen the intersectionality between Pop and Country, Gospel and Trap ( I Luh God!) and everything in between. This year thanks to Hamilton, we’ve also seen a new mixing that has changed the face of Broadway forever.

This past June, Tony Award-winner Daveed Diggs teamed up with long time rapper/friend Rafael Casal to do a workshop called #BARS. The purpose, as stated on the website, was for the rapper who wants to step into the theater or the actor that wants to incorporate rap into their wheelhouse. Due to the success of the first session of #Bars, the two teamed up again with the help of New York’s The Public Theater to present SESSION 2 of the #BARS workshop.
More than just writing and rapping every Monday, #BARS gets to the core of what hip-hop is all about and how it can be incorporated into theater, as well as its neighboring forms (i.e. Poetry). During the weeks participants will have learned; #BARS philosophy, phenomenology, how self & art intersect, history of Oral Tradition, Intersection of Hip-Hop,  & Hip-Hop In Theater, delivery, double and triple-time cadences and function, writing in verse (topic foundation, POV, silo of self, finding your access point) and so much more.
This session begins July 18th and will conclude September 5th with the taping of the #BARS Mixtape Medley Vol.2. Classes are every Monday night from 7pm until 10 pm.
To find out more about what #BARS is about, check out the website and below you’ll find the video of #BARS Mixtape Medley Vol.1.
