A Must See

Cynthia Erivo Sings I’m Here for the Colbert Late Show

The ballots are in and here, at Broadway Black, we’ve decided that Tony-nominated Cynthia Erivo is from another world. While some of us were still singing our Monday blues and lamenting on the far away weekend, Cynthia paid a visit to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform her acclaimed rendition of “I’m Here.”

It’s no wonder she received a standing ovation at the end of the number because it is received every night at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre when she stomps her foot down and stands as tall as the tallest tree as “Miss Celie” in the Tony-nominated Broadway hit The Color Purple.

OK Cynthia, after you brought the audience to tears during the pre-recorded performance, you went straight over to The Theatre World Awards, in your yellow dress (“you like yellow?” *in my Squeak voice), delivered a heartfelt speech, and took home an award for Outstanding Broadway Debut performance? Well, slay Queen, slay.

And let’s not forget that just Saturday morning, Cynthia finished the Airbnb Brooklyn Half Marathon a few short hours before a two show day! Excuse me while I hide my chips and brush the dust off my treadmill.

I’m noticing a pattern here: wake, run/lift, work, make us cry, slay, win, repeat! Well, at that rate Dear Cynthia, we can expect even more slayage (if that’s possible) at the Tony Awards next month!
