A Must See

Is Cynthia Erivo Singing Beyonce’s Sandcastles a Blessing or What?

I had the pleasure of attending this Wednesday’s Ham4Ham and it was nice, perfectly satisfactory. However, I’d like to take us back to August 10th’s Ham4Ham. This was the day the stage doors open and Cynthia Erivo reigned down Bey-like glory onto the masses. The crowd went wild for the Broadway sweetheart! We’ve all been blessed by Erivo’s soul-snatching performance of “I Am Here.” But, it was a pleasant surprise when The Color Purple star graced the steps of the Richard Rogers Theatre to sing from Beyonce’s “Lemonade”.

The moments that followed boasted the talent and finesse that would bring Queen B herself to fandom. Erivo enchanted the crowd singing Beyonce’s “Sandcastles” for all of 46th Street to hear. A hush fell over the hundreds in attendance, only once interrupted by premature applause. But, you can’t blame the guy, I’d applaud Cynthia’s every move if I could.

Cynthia’s rendition of the “Lemonade” hit was peak soul and skill; she is endurance and elegance personified and that performance was absolute proof. Never have the Ham4Ham hundreds received such a gift. Cynthia, you are phenomenal and we thank you for sharing your breathtaking voice! You can see more of Cynthia Erivo in The Color Purple at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre and in her one-night-only concert of The Last Five Years where she wills star alongside Shuffle Along’s beloved Joshua Henry.
