We Were There: Ben Vereen Steppin’ Out At 54 Below

Published

on

If you’ve ever been to 54 Below then, you know the room as an energy of its own. This night was no different. However, the feeling was very much so amplified. Joy was buzzing in our ears as we walked into the beautifully classic supper club. The house was jammed packed with barely enough room between tables but it wasn’t even a problem because we were there for one reason and one reason only. Ben Vereen.

We took our seats and I ordered a glass of wine and as soon as I took my first sip of the sangiovese the show began. It started with an awe-inspiring montage video highlighting some of Mr. Vereen’s greatest moments. There were moments that included everyone from Sammy Davis Jr. to Betty White. From Broadway to the silver screen, it was very evident that he’s had some milestone moments in his career.

After the montage concluded, the magical music of “Magic To Do” started to build and from there the show just took of and he shined. His presence filled the hearts of everyone in the room. He was just so gracious, even to those who came in late. He took the liberty of inviting them in without chastising them but informing them on what they missed in a way that only he could do.

“This evening’s show is all about me. (audience laughter) No. It’s really about you. My thank you to you. You have been there for me since the beginning… – …You are the ones who make us who we are and I thank you!”

His voice still resonates and connects and his smile is one of a kind.  However, it was the journey he took us on through story and song that we will never forget. Classic songs from Pippin, Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, and even Wicked. He took us all the way back and showed us that young boy from Brooklyn and guided us to how he made it to Broadway. He also paid tribute to those who inspired him along the way including Frank Sinatra and Sammie Davis Jr. but, it didn’t stop there.

In the middle of the show he stopped and asked “Is Broadway Black in the house? Andrew Shade are you here?” I raised my hand totally stunned and said “That would be me!”. Instantly a spotlight shined in my eyes and I prayed no one could see the tears starting to form in my eyes as I smiled bright. He continued on, “This young man started his own network called Broadway Black. It’s especially for us and it’s much needed so I just want to Thank you!” and i replied “No. Thank you!” and he snapped back lighting fast “NO! THANK YOU!” the audience clapped for us and the spotlight left and I completely lost my whole cool. It was a feeling I’d never felt. A totally euphoric experience that I’ll never forget. It let me know that we are on the right path. Inspiration at its finest hour.

That inspiration carried on and into the audience and it hit all of us to our core. It even hit the trail blazer, Melba Moore, in the back of the house, as she sat privately with friends and smiled genuinely for her friend and former Hair cast-mate.

True to form, Mr. Vereen let us know how thankful and grateful he was for his audience as he ended his show with “For Good” from the musical Wicked. It was an experience like no other. I ride we would love to take again and we believe we just might get to. Ben Vereen is said to be headed to Broadway and recording a new CD. Something you want to prepare yourself for. We know we will.

Listen to his live version of the song “For Good” below as well as read our live tweets from the show. Its a touching piece we were so glad to witness. Thank you Mr. Vereen for all you’ve done. It is because of you that We Are Broadway Black.

Broadway said “What Blackout?!” and Took Their Talents Outside

Published

The power went clean out in most of Manhattan on Saturday night. The Broadway League released a statement saying most of the shows were canceled and that the power should be restored before the following Sunday matinee. That did end up happening but right after the blackout happened casts of Broadway shows took to the streets to offer up their voices in song to the delight of the many people in the streets who were evacuated from the Broadway houses and neighboring establishments.

Take a look at what shows popped off in the streets of midtown Manhattan!

    1. Of course, Tony Award Winner André De Shields snaps off with the cast of Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre

2. The cast of Aint Too Proud singing Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday” to someone in the crowd from their dressing room windows at the Imperial Theatre. The tweet with the video it’s the cast of Hamilton but twitter did its thing and they quickly corrected them. It was an honest mistake, Hamilton is right next door.)

3. The cast of Come From Away:

4. The cast of Waitress:

5. The cast of Frozen:

West Side Story’s Cool Reimagined by Los York Studios And It’s Pretty… Cool!

As described in their mission statement, Los York is “an integrated production company that executes live action, design, and experimental projects.” An older project of the company resurfaced recently, a reimagined rendition of West Side Story‘s “Cool” scene, is now circulating throughout the internet. The Emmy Award winner and director of the video, Seth Epstein has brilliantly captured the story of rivalry within two different ethnic groups, but this time with more melanin!

The video also features music by Jimek (Run the World Dave Aude Club Remix), and choreography by Keone and Mari Madrid (SYTYCD).

The electrifying footwork, where pirouettes are replaced with pop locking and break dancing in the place of battements, provides hope for bridging racial gaps and relieving tensions. This style is more interpretive, with urban based movements that add an extra layer to some of the barriers printed in the original 1957 production. One thing that I appreciate about the classic musical West Side Story is its transcendent nature and ability to comfortably conform to whatever generation of interest.

Above all else, West Side Story is a love story, a modernized interpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The timelessness in the modernized story–tension between two lovers of opposite gangs–reveals past and present issues found in American society however old and reoccurring they may be. The Los York video demonstrates that flexibility and once again creates an even bigger space for a fabulous classic.

Watch for yourself!
